The car must have no liens or loans against it (else, your finance company must handle the disposal) and you must have the original title ( this is not the registration you keep in the car).

You must sign over the original title to the salvage company who will cancel it with the state,

          Be sure to get an official company logo type form receipt from the wrecker driver showing the pickup date, make / model,  vehicle vin #, your name, drivers name, etc.

You must remove your licensce tag before releasing the vehicle and turn it in at the department of motor vehicles.  After this you may legally cancel the insurance.

If you did not have collision / chomprehensive insurance on the vehicle you should make a FEMA claim.
